Windermere
At 10.5 miles long, one mile wide and 220 feet deep, Windermere is the largest natural lake in England and is fed by numerous rivers.
Windermere has a vehicle carrying cable ferry and various passenger services that serve the length of the lake. Row boats and small motor boats are for hire and with a newly imposed speed limit; the lake is safe for even the most tentative sailors.
Home to three large boating clubs and host to the Winter Series, Windermere has been one of the most popular places for holidays and summer houses since 1847.
In the late 19th Century wealthy businessmen from Lancashire built grand mansions overlooking the lake, one of which is now the National Park Visitor Centre, Brockhole, which opened in 1969 and stretches down to the shore of Windermere, boasting wonderful views of the surrounding countryside. With plenty of places to picnic and relax, Brockhole’s exhibitions, film and slide shows offer an interesting way of learning more about the area. There is also a gift shop, tea room, playground, putting and croquet.
