At eight miles long, Ullswater is the second largest lake in the English Lake District. Clean and clear there are facilities for sailing, sail-boarding, fishing and cruising. The steamers operate throughout the year from Glenridding to Pooley Bridge, stopping in the summer at Howtown. There are various steamer events throughout the year including a Festive Cruise in December offering a superb Christmas lunch. Popular with tourists, but not spoilt by commercialism, Ullswater has a unique and tranquil charm of its own. In the summer the blue water is dotted with colourful sails and the surrounding area with its 16th and 17th Century farmhouses is often the destination for keen horse riders, cyclists, climbers and bird and nature watchers.
