Situated in the North West of England, the Lake District National Park is England’s largest National Park. Famous for stunning scenery, abundant wildlife and cultural heritage, it was established in 1951 and covers 2292 sq km, encompassing high fells, rocky crags, lush green dales, still lakes, vibrant villages, quiet hamlets, sandy beaches and rocky tide pools.

Truly breathtaking, the Lake District’s spectacular landscape has influenced some of England’s best writers, including William Wordsworth, who lived most of his life in the area and who’s ‘Guide through the District of the Lakes’, sparked the first beginnings of mass tourism in the area.

Most experts agree that there are 16 lakes in the Lake District, although there are many other pieces of water, called Tarns. The most notable lakes being Windermere, Coniston and Ullswater, all of which allow private powered craft and have regular steamer, ferry or launch services.

Often described as the country’s biggest adventure playground, the National Park is the birthplace of mountaineering and a magnet for outdoor enthusiasts. Home to England’s five tallest mountains and voted time and again the walker’s favourite UK destination, it is ideal for seasoned adventurers, or those who would rather learn the ropes from qualified guides.

Offering tranquil surroundings and great opportunities for fishing, mountain biking, canoeing and kayaking, the district is also a great place to relax, unwind and escape the hectic pace of everyday life.
